New Videos! Rip Curl GromSearch Stop #3 at New Smyrna Beach Scores Fun but Wild Conditions.
2012 Rip Curl Gromsearch New Smyrna Beach, Florida Highlights
H2O Maneuver of the Event, New Smyrna Beach
Costa Mesa, CA (Aug. 13, 2012): The third stop of the Rip Curl GromSearch surf series presented by H2O Overdrive had a dramatic run Sunday, Aug. 12th, which ranged from pristine early morning offshore conditions to a raucous thunderstorm, which forced the competition to be put on hold in the middle of the 14/U final. Eighty-four eager competitors were met with rippable 2-3 foot conditions at New Symrna Beach Inlet, Florida. Groms from across the coasts of Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Barbados, and even California made the charge to compete for GromSearch glory.
The Boys 16 & under were going big from round one. In the highly contested final there was a flurry of action as all four competitors were able to put a solid score on the board. As the heat wore on Daniel Glenn, of New Smyrna Beach, connected multiple solid outside maneuvers and worked his way to the punchy inside for a finishing crack. Glenn took down the 1st place prize: $200, a Kicker Audio sound system, as well as an armful of prizes. Just coming up short in 2nd place was local boy Noah Schweizer who surfed smooth and radical the whole event. Noah was awarded the H2O Overdrive Maneuver of the Event by nailing a huge backside inverted air reverse in his semi final heat. Finishing in 3rd was Knox Harris and rounding out the final in 4th was Corey Howell.
All four of these surfers, as well as all finalists in each division have earned a coveted invite to compete in the Rip Curl GromSearch National Finals held at Upper Trestles, California on November 17th.
Like the previous RCGS events, the Girls 16 & under was packed with talent. The East Coast girls brought their A-game and displayed to the crowd that they are ready to challenge the rest of the country in the National Championships. In the final, Rossi Klein took down the crown in a hard fought battle against runner up Emily Ruppert. Coming in 3rd was Sydney Herring and 4th , the young up and comer, Caroline Marks.
In the Boys 14 & under there was a mixed field of shredding grommets. However, in the middle of the final a large thunderstorm hit the coast and it began pouring rain. Then, the winds came up and lighting began to strike. With only 3 minutes remaining in the heat, the lifeguards warned us to stop the competition. The surfers paddled in and huddled together under the tents, along with parents, judges and staff. After a 30-minute downpour the storm passed and the event was back on! The groms returned to the lineup to finish the final 3 minutes of their heat. Taking down 1st prize was the grom who flew across coasts to represent for the event, San Clemente, California native, Colin Deveze. Deveze made his trip worth the effort, surfing smart and loose in every heat, which lead him to the victory. Coming up just short, but with an impressive 2nd place showing was local Floridian Luke Marks, 3rd place went to ripper Cobie Gittner, and finishing 4th was a young stylish surfer from Barbados, Dane Mackie.
In the ever-impressive Boys 12 & under division, the young guys brought explosive maneuvers and aggression to the table. Driving down with his family from South Carolina and taking the victory was Boyd Brown. Boyd was a standout in each of his heats tearing his way across the New Smyrna Beach lineup with maturity beyond his years. In 2nd place was an outstanding performance by Barbados native Che Allan. In 3rd was the grom with the biggest smile of the day, Tommy Coleman. Tommy made the crowd's mouth drop to the sand when he busted a huge front side air in his semi final heat. Finishing 4th was Kerlin Sutton.
Rip Curl would like to thank all of its sponsors for making the event such a huge success: H2O Overdrive, Kicker Audio, Dragon Eyewear, Futures Fins, and Waterman's Applied Science. Rip Curl would like to announce a special thanks to Clancy's Cantina for housing our awards ceremony at their great local restaurant.
