LTS Series: Rip Curl Team Shows Up and Blows up at FGR's Still Frothy SurfFest
Last weekend, the Rip Curl team packed up their camping gear and hit the road in the Rip Curl Nav 6 search vehicle. The destination was Pismo Beach to attend the annual FGR Still Frothy Surf Festival presented by Billabong. On the way up the coast Rip Curl team manager, Matt Myers, picked up team riders Trevor Thornton, Noah Wegrich, and Pat Curren. Other team riders who competed in the event we're 3-time ASP world champ, Tom Curren, Brad Flora, and Sean Woods.
After a quick stop to freesurf at one of Pat's favorite local spots, the boys set up camp in Pismo to prepare for the event. The first day of the event, the boys surfed in the invitational Tow-At airshow, while the RC team put on an amazing display it wasn't enough to take down world renowned aerialist Albee Layer. During the 2nd day of the event, the boys competed in the Pro-Am division. Surfers arrived from all across the California and Hawaii to compete for the $3,000 purse. In the end Noah “Waggy” Wegrich almost had the win as he came up short, taking 2nd place to winner, Torrey Meister. Noah walked away with $800 and a huge smile! Pat Curren finished right behind Noah in 3rd place making some cash and beating some of his surfing heroes. Trevor Thornton & Matt Myers we're both put out in the semi final, with impressive results of their own. Sean Woods held it down for the Groms in the 14 & under, while finishing 2nd place.
After a long weekend of glassy waves, big airs, bonfires and beautiful sunsets, it was time for the boys to get back on the road and head home. A successful trip and some fond memories were shared. We'll be back next year in full force!
*Special thanks to Walt Cerney for putting on such a great event.
