391 - Rip Curl Australian FreeRide Pro 2008: Throwdown Event and Wrap-Up Highlights

 <itunes:author>Rip Curl International</itunes:author>

The finals of the Rip Curl Australian Freeride Pro were run today in perfect snow in the “black diamond” advanced terrain of Thredbo’s famous Bluff.

Spectators and competitors were calling it the best action ever seen in a freeride competition with 29 of Australia’s best skiers and snowboarders revelling in the perfect snow conditions and aiming to take a large share of the $20,000 prize money on offer.

It was a very difficult task for the judges, but in the end it was the superior technical tricks and difficult lines of Sam Foster (men’s ski), Nate Johnstone (men’s snowboard) and Wiki Jones (women’s snowboard) that edge them into first place.

The course consisted of man-made jumps, and log rails mixed in with the natural rock bands and cornices. The skiers and snowboarders really stepped it up with the announcer running out of superlatives as they threw down a variety of 540s, 720s, front flips and back flips with speed, control and precision.

Each competitor had two runs through the course, the results coming from the highest scoring runs. Highlights were Sam Foster’s huge 1080 spin off a 10-foot cornice, Andrea Berchtold’s 50-foot front flip and Nate Johnstone’s cab 540 (reverse spin).

The results in the men’s snowboard were very close, only a point separating first and third, but it was Nate Johnstone’s (Mona Vale, NSW) flawless second run that gave him the edge over Shayne Pospisil (Mammoth Mountain, USA) and Ryan Tiene (Port Macquarie, NSW).

In the men’s skiing Jindabyne’s Sam Foster nailed an aggressive, creative line to push Andrea Berchtold (Jindabyne, NSW) into second with Watkin McLennan (Mt Buller, Vic) third. For Foster the win in his first major victory.

In the women’s snowboard, Ali Deane, number one qualifier and 2007 Rip Curl Freeride Pro champ, had to pull out due to a knee injury. That left Wiki Jones (Thredbo, NSW), Kym Cragnolini (Jindabyne, NSW) and Laura Williams (Thredbo, NSW) to battle it out in the final. Jones emerged as a clear winner, with Cragnolini second, just ahead of Williams.

The finals capped off a sensational week of skiing and snowboarding and included a spectacular under-lights rail and big air event last night – The Rip Curl Invitational Throwdown.

A big crowd was entertained as the invited athletes made the most of the unique set-up which include two jumps, two rails and two spectacular wall rides. In a unique twist the riders and skiers judged the overall winners themselves with Boen Ferguson (Jindabyne, NSW), Tom McGrath (Canberra, ACT) and Erin Tanner (Canberra, ACT) taking the tile and the cash.

The Rip Curl Australian Freeride Pro has gone down as the best and most unique snow event of 2008 and will be an integral part of the 2009 snow event calendar.

390 - Rip Curl Australian FreeRide Pro 2008: Day 1 Action Highlights

 <itunes:author>Rip Curl International</itunes:author>

Day one of the Rip Curl Australian Freeride Pro supported by Jim Beam was held in perfect conditions in Thredbo today with many spectators calling it the best ever ski and snowboard event held in Australia.

The contest is different as it is not held in the controlled environment of the terrain park or half pipe, but was held in natural terrain of the Bluff/Cannonball area which contains some of Australia’s most advanced and varied terrain.

The Rip Curl Australian Freeride Pro attracted some of Australia’s best skiers and snowboarders as well as international competitors, and carried $20,000 prize money.

The event involved eight divisions – Men’s Open Ski and Snowboard, Junior Men’s Ski and Snowboard, Open Women’s Ski and Snowboard and Junior Women’s Ski and Snowboard.

Competitors were judged on two runs, their best score counting towards the results.

In the Open Men’s 12 skiers and 12 snowboarders have made it through to tomorrow’s finals and the action was fast and furious.

Today spectators were treated to a combination of big aerial manoeuvres and rock jumps as the competitors revelled in the soft dry snow.

In the Men’s Open the top three qualifiers in snowboard were Nathan Perry, Tyson Carr and Ryan Tiene. In the skiing Boen Ferguson, William Dawson and Jordan Houghton were the top three.

The open women’s snowboard saw three Thredbo riders take the top spots for tomorrow’s finals – Ali Deane, Wiki Jones and Kaura Williams.

The forecast is for another good day and great snow and organisers are expecting the competitors to step it up even further.

The other divisions were wrapped up today with Zoe Jaboor from Mount Buller, Vic wining the open women’s ski, Torie Hamilton-Wilson the junior women’s ski. The junior division was a great showcase of Australia’s future snow talent with Lucas Marshall (Jindabyne, NSW) winning the skiing and Billy Hayman (Jindabyne, NSW) the snowboarding. Jess Shanahan won the junior women’s snowboarding.

After tomorrow’s open finals the action continues with the Rip Curl Invitational Throwdown. It is a rail and air comp and will be held under lights tomorrow night, followed by a huge after party.

367 - Mick Fanning 2007 Foster's ASP World Champion: Freesurfing at home on the Goldcoast

 <itunes:author>Rip Curl International</itunes:author>

Mick Eugene Fanning was born in the Western Sydney suburb of Penrith in 1981, but has called the north coast of NSW home since his family relocated him there as a youngster.

Mick developed his surfing amongst a hotbed of talent, taking over the punchy beach breaks of D'bah and the grinding world class points of Kirra and Burleigh. He was turning into an all-round class act and evolved into one of Australia's "future surfing stars".

Fanning forged a close bond with fellow teenage stars Joel Parkinson and Dean Morrison and the infamous 'Cooly Kids' crew eventually pushed their way onto the world stage.

In 1999 Mick made some marks on the contest scene that set him apart from other juniors chasing glory. Seven skins in a row at the money-rich Konica Super Skins event at Sandon Point netted him $21,000 and proved he could mix it with the world's elite after beating Occy, Luke Egan, Beau Emerton, Dooma Hardman and Davo along the way. He then claimed the prestigious HB/OE Pro Junior title at Narrabeen and followed it with a win the next week at the Jetty Surf Pro Junior at Bells Beach.

In 2001 Mick was given a wildcard entry into the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach - a ticket straight to the main stage of international surfing. Mick lived up to the hype and won the contest in emphatic fashion, dedicating the victory to his deceased brother, Sean. He also won the ASP WQS Title that year.

2002 was Fanning's first year on the ASP World Championship Tour and the 21-year-old won the Billabong Pro in South Africa on his way to finishing 5th overall on the ratings. This result is the highest ranking achieved by a WCT rookie since Kelly Slater won the World Title in his 1992 debut season.

2003 was another awesome year for Mick and he was a contender for the WCT Title right until the second last event of the season. Mick ended up finishing fourth overall on the Top 45 ratings behind Andy Irons, Slater and Taj Burrow.

A lot of people expected 2004 to be Mick's World Title year and the season was set to be a huge one, but a horrific freesurfing mishap on a Search trip mid-year put him out of action for five months with a heavy hamstring tear. Some feared he'd never surf at his top level ever again.

Mick made his way into the water in December and after flying to Hawaii to attend WCT Meetings and watch the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters, Mick was awarded a Tour wildcard by his peers for re-entry into the 2005 WCT.

Undergoing vigorous rehab training, Mick got himself fit and ready for the 2005 season. His comeback event would be Stop 1 of the season - the Quiksilver Pro at Mick's home break of Snapper Rocks in Australia.

Matching Rip Curl teammate Steph Gilmore's remarkable title win in the Women's WCT at Snapper Rocks that week, Mick proved to the world that he was well and truly back by smashing the field and starting the year in first place on the WCT rankings.

He kept himself in the World Top 3 by winning the inaugural Rip Curl Pro Search WCT in Reunion Island and finishing runner-up to AI at the season's final event, the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters.

Congratulations Mick - bring on 2008!

Congratulations Mick - bring on 2008!</itunes:summary>

365 - Rip Curl Rocks the Beach: Celebrating Indonesia’s first surf and music festival - Part #2

 <itunes:author>Rip Curl International</itunes:author>

Kuta Beach in Bali is the proving ground for any surfer in Indonesia. it is the spot where most of the Bali Boys started surfing and it is where Indonesia’s most progressive surfing can be witnessed on a daily basis.

The day started out at 6:30 am with two trial heats, before going into the first round at about 7:15 am. The final wrapped up at 5:30, so it was a full day of surfing with fairly consistent 2-3 foot conditions early with the higher tide, then dropping a bit to 1-2 foot on the low tide.

A fair amount of close out waves gave the boys some challenges, but local knowledge had most of the top seeded surfers like Rizal Tanjung, Bol, Made “Garut” Widiartha, Ketut “Mega” Semadhi, Marlon Gerber, and Mustofa Jeksen getting through into the quarterfinals. And though it would seem that the smaller and lighter guys would have had the best shot at the win, due to the small waves, a look at the final four proved otherwise.

Local knowledge and experience were critical, and all the finalists have surfed Halfways since they were kids, so knowing its quirks and kinks were key success factors.

364 - Rip Curl Rocks the Beach: Celebrating Indonesia’s first surf and music festival

 <itunes:author>Rip Curl International</itunes:author>

Rip Curl introduced a new event formula, mixing up surfing and live music, and creating Indonesia’s first SURF AND MUSIC FESTIVAL, held on Bali’s world famous Kuta Beach on Sunday October 7. Similar to Rip Curl’s International Surf and Music festivals in Bells Beach, Australia and Hossegor, France the event featured an ISC (Indonesian Surfing Championship tour) sanctioned surf event followed by a concert featuring some of Indonesia’s most up and coming bands drawing around 2000 people to the beach to check out this innovative event.

The day started out at 6:30 am with two trial heats, before going into the first round at about 7:15 am. It was a full day of surfing with fairly consistent 2-3 foot conditions early with the higher tide, then dropping a bit to 1-2 foot on the low tide. A fair amount of close-out waves gave the boys some challenges, but local knowledge had most of the top seeded surfers like Lee Wison, Rizal Tanjung, Bol, Made “Garut” Widiartha, Ketut “Mega” Semadhi, getting through into the quarterfinals. And though it would seem that the smaller and lighter guys would have had the best shot at the win, due to the small waves, a look at the final four proved otherwise. Local knowledge and experience were critical, and all the finalists have surfed Halfways Break since they were kids, so knowing its quirks and kinks were key success factors. In the end, current ISC Pro Series points leader Lee Wilson continued his charge for the championship with his win at the Rip Curl Surf and Music Festival on Sunday, waiting until the final minutes to pick off two high scoring waves and wrestle the lead away from Tipi Jabrik, who looked to have the win solidly in hand.

After the awards presentation, the crowd moved down the beach to the big Rip Curl Stage, where they were treated to several hours of live music. Headlined by Saint Loco, a popular band from Jakarta local bands Fuzz Clan, Painful by Kisses, Discotion Pill and Scared of Bums rocked the beach playing powerful rock until late at night.

All in all the Rip Curl Surf & Music Festival was a fantastic mix. The big crowd of surf and music fans rocked Kuta massively, dancing through the night…so be sure to be there next year!

335 - Rip Curl Freeride Pro 2007: Day 02 Highlights (Finals)

 <itunes:author>Rip Curl International</itunes:author>

The Rip Curl Freeride Pro presented by Redken saw Ryan Tiene and Boen Ferguson take-out first place in their divisions, claiming their share of the $25,000 prize money.

Boen Ferguson’s hopes were realized today “There’s $3,500 in prize money so it’d be nice to win”.

With early morning storms looming, event organizers decided to move the event to mid-mountain, but as the first competitor hit the course the sun broke through the clouds, making it a spectacular day at Thredbo.

The Thredbo events & park team worked through the night, and pulled together a fantastic course with a rail, two fifty-foot jumps and 1 hip jump to finish.

With high-profile athletes like Andy Finch (USA Olympian) in the event, the riders definitely pushed themselves to the limits in their attempt to win a share of the $25,000 prize money.

Eventual winner Ryan Tiene said “It’s been rain, snow, clouds this morning, now we got sun. It’s Australia! But we’ll see what happens with the ‘big dog’ [Andy Finch]”.

The winners in the ladies divisions were Alison Dean (Victoria) in Open Women’s Snowboard and Zoe Joboor (Victoria) in Open Women’s Ski.

USA Olympian Andy Finch came in second and young Nate Johnstone placed third in the Open Men’s Snowboard.

Other standouts were Russell Henshaw (NSW) and Chris Booth (NSW) who came in second and third, respectively in the Open Men’s Ski.

Presenting sponsor Redken threw down $500 for the most experimental manoeuvre in both the ski and snowboard divisions. Andrea Berchtold pulled off a switch back flip on skis. Jim Cunningham on snowboard pulled off a half-cab nollie front-flip (a backwards 180 spin to forward flip) - making him one of the only riders in the world to have landed this trick.

Russell Henshaw commented, “Everyone’s doing really well and the standard is really good. The jumps are good and it’s a good atmosphere”

The village backdrop along with some periodic sunshine provided the perfect setting for the event, with riders and event organisers both commenting on the great vibe.

“Everyone’s riding pretty good, it’s fun, the weather’s good. You can’t ask for much more,” Russell Holt said.

The first year in it’s running the Rip Curl Freeride Pro has proven to be an outstanding success. After the testing conditions earlier this week, event organisers and competitors were all smiles at the end of the day.

334 - Rip Curl Freeride Pro 2007: Day 01 Highlights

 <itunes:author>Rip Curl International</itunes:author>

Rip Curl Freeride Pro gets underway today at Thredbo

The Rip Curl Freeride Pro kicked off at Thredbo on Wednesday August 15th, with some of Australia’s best skiers and snowboarders strutting their stuff at Thredbo’s Advanced Terrain Park.

Originally planned for Thredbo’s famous Bluff run, the event was moved to the Terrain Park due to early morning conditions on The Bluff being unsuitable for even the best skiers & snowboarders. Freeride Pro Competition Director, Tim Stuart stated, “It was unsafe to run on The Bluff”.

As expected, the Open Men’s Ski & Snowboard divisions showcased some great Australian and International talent. Leading the ratings after Day 1 are:
Open Men’s Snowboard: Ryan Tiene (Port Macquarie, NSW)
Open Men’s Ski: Russ Henshaw (Jindabyne, NSW)

Max Timmins (Jindabyne Skier) commented on the overall vibe of the event, “Everyone’s having fun so it doesn’t matter about the rankings”.

Other standouts were Nate Johnstone & Russ Holt in the Open Men’s Snowboard division and Johnny Lipzker & Chris Booth Alison Dean in the Open Men’s Ski division.

All riders and event personnel will meet tomorrow at 9 am to decide on the event, with two days left in the waiting period and only half a day required to finish the competition, organisers will pick the best conditions to run the finals.
