Costa Mesa, CA (July 12th, 2014): Hawaii's top talent gathered once again at Kewalo Basin on the south shore of Oahu for the annual Rip Curl GromSearch presented by mophie. With a packed field of 88 competitors greeted to highly rippable 2-3 foot offshore peaks, the level of surfing was through the roof! Competitors not only battled for bragging rights, cash, huge prize bags, but more importantly the highly coveted invitation to compete in the RCGS National Final to be held this October, at Upper Trestles, CA.
With the four top finishers in each division earning a spot at Uppers, the boys & girls in the 16 & under divisions will also have the opportunity to compete in the RCGS International Final, which is going on the Search in 2014 to an undisclosed location. First place at Nationals in both boys and girls 16U will be awarded an all paid expense trip to compete for the global title.
Elijah Gates is one competitor who dreams to make the international event, as Gates proved to be the stand out of the boys 16 & under division. Gates tore apart the Kewalos lineup heat after heat to take top honors ahead of Hawaiian standouts, Shayden Paccaro, Cody Young, and Loa Ng.
"I am so stoked to win the GromSearch during my last year because I always surf the event against my friends and whoever wins has bragging right for the next year," stated the humbled champion Gates, "The GromSearch is one of my favorite contests because they have such amazing prizes. It's one of the contests that really gives back to the kids."
The girls 16 & under had a stacked 6 girl final, with the top four receiving invites to the National Final. Once again Oahu's Dax McGill took top honors for the 2nd year in a row. Dax's competitive drive combined with her raw talent took the win over Hawaii's finest rippers, Emily Nishimoto, Tiare Thompson, Brittany Penaroza, Mainei Kinimaka, and Summer Macedo.
Moving on to the boys 14 & under, there were only two double finalists of the event, Cody Young, and Loa Ng. These two boys finalized up a division as well as finishing top two in their own respected age group, with Cody Young taking the slight nod. Young's large frame tore apart Kewalos forgiving lefts with a backhand attack that would make Andy Irons proud. Ng came up short in 2nd, with Elijah Fox in 3rd, and Devin Brueggeman in 4th.
Kauai's Elijah Fox didn't take the 14U title, but he did receive the mophie maneuver of the event for a tail high nosepick air reverse. Fox took home a custom embroidered backpack stuffed with amazing prizes and $50 cash courtesy of mophie.
The youngest division saw the tightest battle of all the finals. The boys 12 & under had the top three finishers all with combined heat totals over 16 points, with 1st through 3rd only a half point margin. Coming out on top and nailing a 9.8 in the final was Jackson Bunch, 2nd place went to Robert Grillho III, 3rd Wyatt McHale, and rounding out the final was Cole Alves.
Rip Curl's Official Retail Partner of the GromSearch Kewalos, Hawaiian Island Creations, once again donated a custom surfboard to the most inspirational surfer who demonstrated sportsmanship and aloha spirit, this year's victor was Jake Riccobuano. Congrats Jake!
