Ten Monthly Moments - End of Year 2012
1. Alana Re-Claims What's Hers
Quite frankly, she's back where she belongs, don't ya think? The natural beauty from Kauai strung together some strong results at the end of the year to officially re-qualify for the 2013 ASP Women's WCT! Not only is Alana one of the world's best surfers, but she's not too tough on the eyes in the latest MY BIKINI campaign clip.
2. Wilko Hearts Santa Cruz
Wilko and Santa Cruz make music together. Both a bit eclectic, a bit odd, a bit beautiful. Whatever the case, Wilko was right at home on the lined up walls of Steamer Lane for the O'neill Cold Water Classic. His backhand blazed, the crowd cheered, the girls admired. Wilko scored a runner-up finish, and his best career result. Speaking of cold water, we have an answer to that.
3. Tom Curren Releases New Album
Tom Curren. You think of his style. His World Titles. Searching For Tom Curren! But you may have forgotten that he is a brilliant musician. Fortunately for all of our ears, Tom has dropped his new album SUMMERLAND ROAD, available in iTunes here.
4. Owen's Recreational Vehicle Experience
Owen Wright chose to indulge in an all-American tradition. Road trip. In an RV. With his babe and some bros. It was documented and turned into a short film by What Youth. Check Owen hit the highway and hit some central California ramps here.
5. Going, Going. Back, Back. To Puerto Rico, Rico.
Maybe it's the perfect waves. Perhaps it's the rum. Whatever the reason may be, when we left Puerto Rico after the 2010 Rip Curl Pro Search, a piece of us stayed behind. Now we're coming back. We're excited. It's the 2013 Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico (4-Star Rated), and from February 9-13 you can either join us in paradise or watch the live webcast on ripcurl.com
6. Mick Shapes, Mick Scores (the cover)
Really, Mick?? 2x ASP World Champ. Legend of a human. Fastest surfer in the world. Like those titles weren't enough. Now you gotta throw in "talented surfboard shaper" in the mix as well?! Truly a man of many talents. Mick Fanning shaped a board for Surfing World Magazine he called Lemmy's Lemons. It wasn't a lemon though, It just happened to work so well, he scored the cover.
7. Rip Curl Malibu: Now Open
It's where Miki Dora became a rebellious legend. It's where they filmed Point Break ("Utah, make it two!"). Dillon Perillo calls it home. Now, so do we. Rip Curl Malibu, our new flagship store, is now open in the Malibu Colony, and we're offering the best in wetsuits, surfboards, and gems like these.
8. Rip Curl Hell Team in Hawaii
They're young. They have fun. They rip. Rip Curl's new breed of global talent, dubbed "The Hell Team", descended on Oahu's North Shore for a week of surf, filming, and schooling. Thanks to the likes of Pancho Sullivan and Tom Curren, the boys received a healthy dose of knowledge on what it takes to make it big and turn this surfing thing into a full-time job. They didn't disappoint.
9. Medina Flips Out
"Medina Flips Out" or "The World Flips Out on Medina"? Not sure which title is more accurate, but the kid has taken the world by storm. Not only with a contest jersey on, but during his recent Hawaiian freesurfs where he recognized "pulling the greatest air of his life". This came in the form of a 6' high fully-inverted backflip, pulled cleanly at Off The Wall. Witness the milestone here.
22 years on tour, one of the greatest surfers ever, an all-around legendary human being, Taylor Knox has officially departed from the WCT after this year's Pipeline Masters. It didn't happen without acknowledgment and appreciation. Carried up the sand by buds Mick Fanning, Mike Parsons, and Kelly Slater, the surfing world tipped their hat to Taylor for his contribution to the sport. And, the festivities continued at a surprise nighttime celebration attended by some 150 of Taylor's closest family, friends, and WCT tour mates. Thank you, Taylor.
