Rip Curl’s junior team consisting of 22 boys and girls under the age of 17 from up and down the East and West Coasts as well as Hawaii, joined forces for its annual Team Summit. The day started bright and early at Extreme Athletics, which has recently been brought on as the official training facility of Rip Curl athletes and staff. The team was lead by Extreme Athletics founders Jon Brown and Paul Norris. In a sequence of surf specific exercises, from box jumps, climbing ropes, and pushing over tires, the groms dominated the training session. Upon leaving, they were more fired up than when they arrived.

Next up was the one hour tag team challenge which was won by the foursome consisting of Crosby Colapinto, Ocean Donaldson-Sargis, Koby Hughes, and Joey Samuelian. The winners scored a massive box of Sour Patch Kids as their prize! The entire team then went on to tear apart the Newport Beach lineup as an all-out super session ensued.

Leaving the beach, the team then visited the Rip Curl USA Headquarters for a tour and a catered lunch courtesy of Avila’s El Ranchito. Post lunch re-fuel, the team was introduced to a special guest by the name of Barney Miller. Barney spent the afternoon telling his Rip Curl teammates about his inspiring story of overcoming obstacles and following his dreams. Barney is the star of the documentary “YOU and ME” which is currently premiering all over the world and he took time to answer questions from all the groms.

After learning a bit more about Rip Curl, it’s athletes, and it’s history, it was time for some more fun as the team took over SKY HIGH for two hours of trampoline madness! From dodgeball, to backflips into the foam pit, the ultimate game of thunder, and more… the team bounced off the walls (literally) in a frenzy of fun.

With the day wrapping up, groms covered in sweat and exhausted, it was time to head home. Maui’s Cole Alves was awarded the day’s MVP for his great attitude, calm demeanor, high scoring air reverse in the surf contest, and absolutely dominating display during ‘Thunder’ at Sky High. For his efforts Cole was awarded a complete CARVER Skateboard! Thank you Carver crew.

Rip Curl is extremely proud of our junior squad who represent The Ultimate Surfing Company.
