SENIOR DESIGNER/DEVELOPER, CLOSED-TOE FOOTWEAR sought by Rip Curl, Inc. in Costa Mesa, CA.
Duties: Responsible for the fashion design of a complete, well balanced and market leading closed-toe footwear collection. Coordinate product development. Design and develop closed-toe footwear from the point of conception to execution of the end product with an emphasis placed on current market trends, technical detail, quality construction and performance. Create innovative closed-toe footwear designs utilizing technologies and applications including Vulcalite and Project Resurrection. Develop the infrastructure for our closed-toe footwear division by creating the footwear design templates, standards, and guidelines for closed-toe footwear. Create current styles and concepts for Rip Curl’s closed-toe footwear product line and develop the footwear product line for the next season. Conduct extensive research on materials, fits, print techniques, trims, branding and new developments to ensure that Rip Curl is market leading in the closed-toe footwear category. Conduct domestic and international research within the surf market and trend forward avenues. Research and test footwear innovations. Design and develop footwear product range to the LBS requirements, all footwear SMU styles, design to matrix format for internal and external pre-lining, and design to key brand values and culture. Collaborate with designers and merchants to develop all styles (last, fit, outsoles, fabric, trim, screen print and embellishments). Review tech packs from designers before handing them over to suppliers. Coordinate sourcing meetings for each season with designers, merchants and footwear chairman to determine best source for each style. Manage proto, SMS, pre-production fit and footwear construction comments from designers and merchants to vendors to ensure quality of products. Perform all other senior designer/developer, closed-toe footwear duties.
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or foreign degree equivalent in Design, Fashion, Product Design, or a related field, plus Five (5) years of experience as Footwear Designer/Developer or related occupation within the action sports market industry, including post-baccalaureate, progressive experience in working on trend boards elaboration, color forecasting and material sourcing; performing technical verification of footwear designs with developers and manufacturers; creating and developing new and original closed-toe footwear designs; researching and selecting materials for use in production; experience in last, fit, fabrics and footwear construction; and coordinating product design execution and manufacturing.
