Stephanie Gilmore Joins Mark Howard On The Howie Games Podcast
Eight-time World Surfing Champion Stephanie Gilmore sits down with esteemed sports journalist, Mark ‘Howie’ Howard, in the latest instalment of The Howie Games podcast.
Over two episodes, Howie and Steph unpack her journey to becoming the greatest female surfer of all time.
Showing competitive instincts from a young age, Steph takes us through her grom days when she would “down a bag of lollies and some chips covered with chicken salt” before a heat, all the way through to winning her record-breaking eighth world title.
When asked what it meant to become statistically the greatest female surfer of all time, Steph reveals her competitive spirit is still as strong as ever.
“There were a lot of things that just lined up and it was just kind of, meant to be… I’m so proud of it. But it also made me think, ‘Huh, maybe I could win nine’.”
As they chat, Steph opens up about the personal hurdles she’s overcome, showcasing the emotional resilience that has shaped her career. This strength also led to her decision to take a break from competitive surfing after 17 years, during which she designed her debut fashion collection with Rip Curl and embraced the spirit of the Search.
“I think the coolest part about surfing, always, is the anticipation. You have this idea before you go to sleep of what it might be, you’ve read the swell charts, or you can hear the ocean."
"You spend the whole night sleepless, imagining what it’s going to be like. And then you wake up and get that first glimpse of the ocean and see what it’s doing… that’s the ultimate spirit of adventurous surfing.”
