Behind the Scenes at the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal with Lukas Skinner

Attending a Championship Tour event is already a rare experience, but getting a behind-the-scenes look at the competition and access to the athlete-only zones is even more exclusive.

While in Peniche for the third stop of the CT, young English surf prodigy Lukas Skinner took the opportunity to give us a tour of the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal site.

A One-of-a-Kind Entrance

One of the event’s most unique features stands out right at the entrance: the parking lot. Unlike other surf events, athletes park directly along the main path leading to the site, the very same route spectators take.

"It's pretty crazy—they park exactly where everyone walks through. There's no other event in the world like this! They park here and then have this amazing walk to the competition site!" says Lukas with a smile.

Surf Shops and a Stunning View of Supertubos

Before reaching the beach, visitors pass through a lively area filled with food stalls and surf shops, including the Rip Curl store. Spectators even had the chance to get their wetsuits repaired by Patricia, whom Lukas calls a "legend!"

Walking along the beach, the view of Supertubos is breathtaking, leading up to the restricted access areas.

Inside the Athlete Zone

Among these exclusive spaces is the athlete area, which, according to Lukas, is "one of the biggest on tour." Here, competitors can watch the contest from a balcony, grab a meal, warm up, rest… or even play golf!

"There’s also a bit of entertainment—like golf—and it’s actually really tough! I love golf, and so do all the guys!"

The Locker Room – The Heart of the Competition

Finally, the most coveted area for surf fans: the locker room. This is where surfers change before their heats, store their boards, and mentally prepare for the competition.

"This is where everyone gets ready and keeps all their boards. I had never seen anything like this before—it's insane!" says Lukas, visibly impressed.
