Wear a Rash vest or a Surf Suit
If there’s one piece of advice we can give you when it comes to surfing sun protection, it’s that you need the right equipment when you’re in the water. Rather than just wearing boardies or a bikini, try wearing a long sleeve surf shirt or a surf suit. Our super soft and lightweight surf suit and surf shirt material offers 50+ sun protection and will keep you confident in even the hottest peak of the day.

Use Sport Sunscreen
This one really goes without saying… but, using the right sunscreen for surfing and being active in the water is probably the most crucial component to sun safety in the line-up.

Bring Overswim
After a long session in the surf, you might want to spend some time relaxing on the sand with your friends or family. And that afternoon sun, well… it can get you! Make sure you can stay comfortable on the beach with something to throw over your swimwear, and protect your chest and arms from those pesky UVs.

Surfing under the summer sun is a dreamy pursuit, but you can have too much of a good thing! Read on for everything you need to know about staying sun safe in the surf and at the beach.
t’s that time of year again – the holidays are in full swing, the ocean is the warmest it’s been all year, and the summer sun has started to get just that little bit more intense. Being sunsmart at the beach is extremely important, especially in the southern hemisphere where the sun's rays are stronger and it takes less time to get burnt. The crew at Rip Curl in Torquay know this all too well, and we’re all about ensuring you, and your family, are equipped to stay out and enjoy those long days at the beach and in the surf – which is why we’ve put such an emphasis on staying sun safe.
So, what are the best ways to ensure you’re protected from the sun, while you’re in the surf?
1. UV protective surf-wear:
A full wetsuit steamer is too much for a hot summer’s day, but thinner options specifically made for hot weather and water are the perfect way to block out UV rays. Long sleeve rash vests, wetsuit jackets and 2mm wetsuits aren’t too hot for warmer waters but they’ll take off any wind chill and allow you to surf for longer under sweltering sunshine without getting burnt.
2. Wear a Surf Hat for the waves, and keep another hat for on the beach
Your cap or bucket hat is perfect for lazing about on the beach but keeping it on your head while surfing, duck-diving, or wiping-out is near on impossible. That’s exactly why Rip Curl developed the surf series bucket hat. It’s made from a durable and DWR treated fabric, so water beads off it quickly and it retains a lightweight comfy fit. It offers UPF 50+ UV sun protection, featuring a shock cord head adjuster and chin strap adjuster to keep it secured, mesh vents too keep you cool, and remove-able legionnaire style neck flap for extra protection.
3. Use Sunscreen (that works in the water)
Rip Curl’s SPF 50+ Zinc Oxide Sunscreen is an essential surf product. Australian-made with a reef-friendly formula, it is 4 hours water resistant and provides epic protection on wet and dry skin. Designed with a soothing aloe vera base with moisturising sunscreen is suitable for even the most sensitive skin types.
4. Bring Overswim
Beachwear and overswim clothing are perfect for layering over your bikini or one-piece. After a long day in the sun and surf, there's nothing better than drying off and slipping on a comfy, breezy outfit. Protect yourself from the elements with a variety of beachwear cover-ups, including dresses or oversized shirts.
Stay safe out there and enjoy the waves and beach all summer long!
