The Eddie Aikau Foundation Presents Rip Curl The Eddie Big Wave Invitational, In Memory Of Eddie Aikau

"The Eddie" is a prestigious big-wave invitational surf contest, named in honor of the legendary Eddie Aikau. Aikau, a fearless lifeguard and surfer from Oahu's North Shore, became famous for his boldness in chasing the biggest swells and tackling the most treacherous waves. This season's opening ceremony will take place at Waimea Bay on December 6, 2024, officially kicking off the contest window.

Opening Ceremony:
The Eddie opening ceremony took place at Waimea Bay on Friday December 6, 2024. Invitees, alternates, and members of the surfing community gathered to honour the legacy of Eddie Aikau and usher in a new season of the specialty big wave event. Organisers and surfers will now continue to closely monitor swell forecasts, waiting in eager anticipation for Waimea to come to life.

Event Info:
The Eddie is committed to running only in the heaviest conditions, with a competition window from December 14 to March 13. For the event to be called on, waves must consistently reach at least 20+ feet (Hawaiian scale), with ideal conditions pushing 30-40 feet. The Eddie has only run 10 times in the last 40 years.

How To Get To Waimea Bay:

  • By Car: Waimea Bay is located approximately 4.5 miles northeast of Haleiwa on Kamehameha Highway. Honolulu, on the other side of the island, is a 34 mile (45 minute without traffic) drive away.

  • By Bus: Waimea can be reached via public transit on Bus Route 60 from Haleiwa.
