Rip Curl Mirage3DP Boardshort Takes Home 2024 ISPO Award
Soon you can surf in award-winning boardshorts.
Rip Curl’s Mirage3DP Boardshort has won the prestigious 2024 ISPO Award, recognizing outstanding achievements in the sporting goods industry. The award will be presented today at the ISPO Show in Munich, Germany.
Developed in collaboration with Moon Creative Lab and Bilio, the Mirage3DP Boardshort sets a new benchmark for innovation and sustainability in surf apparel.
The collaboration combines Rip Curl’s expertise in technical surf products, Moon Creative Lab’s innovative 3D printing materials and systems called ‘Variloom’, and Bilio’s expertise in complex soft goods design.
“We’re honored to receive this prestigious award and to be recognized alongside our partners as leaders in the sports industry,” said Milan Thompson, Head of Product Innovation and Sustainability at Rip Curl.
“As the Ultimate surfing company, Rip Curl is committed to challenging the status quo by pushing the boundaries of innovation. As an industry first to integrate 3D printed textiles into a boardshort, we’re able to showcase true leadership in product design, material engineering, and product circularity.”
What this means for surfers
- The Mirage3DP Boardshort uses 3D printing technology and materials to create a comfortable waistband that won’t move around, even when you duck dive.
- Internal grip inserts and 3D integrated mesh side panels have been designed for better ventilation and fit, resulting in superior comfort and in-water performance.
- Rip Curl’s strategic collaboration with Moon Creative Lab aims to create a fully bespoke, 100% 3D-printed product, with the long-term goal of offering boardshorts that can be printed on demand, tailored to your exact measurements.
- By purchasing the Mirage3DP Boardshort, you will be supporting Variloom and Rip Curl’s goal to reduce production waste, product inventory, and dependence on offshore manufacturing.
- You can be confident in the durability of the 3DP Boardshort, knowing that the product is undergoing rigorous testing and refinement, showing strong results after 300 hours in the water.
The Mirage3DP Boardshort is scheduled for release in 2026.
