Costa Mesa, CA (December 3rd, 2015): 2015 has been a dominant year for Rip Curl Team Rider and 3x World Champion Mick Fanning. Today he adds to his impressive career taking the win at the 2015 Vans World Cup. In proper 8-12ft. surf at Sunset Beach on the North Shore of Oahu, Mick battled through a field of hungry competitors both looking for their chance to earn a spot on the 2016 World Championship Tour as well as those seeking the prestigious 1st place finish at one of the most challenging and powerful breaks on the North Shore.
By the end of the final day of the Vans World Cup, Mick surfed his way through four heats to claim his first World Cup win at Sunset Beach. Starting with his first heat of the day in Round 4, Mick easily advanced posting an 8.33 and 9.20. In his Quarterfinal heat, Mick finished tied for first with WCT hopeful Connor Coffin. Each surfer had only three waves, and Mick narrowly edged out Connor in the tie break with a slightly higher third wave score to win the heat. Mick’s Semifinal heat was the only heat of the day he did not win, but with the top two surfers advancing, Mick made it to the Final just behind fellow World Tour competitor John John Florence.
Mick joined Julian Wilson, John John Florence and fellow Rip Curl Team Rider Matt Wilkinson in the final. With the conditions holding steady and a cast of World Tour competitors, the final was set at one of the North Shore’s most iconic breaks. Julian quickly opened with an excellent range score of 9.47, leaving the field with a bit of catching up to do. Not one to be easily phased in competition, Mick took a medium sized wave and posted a 5.33 to get on the board. Then, Fanning found a gem pulling into a clean barrel standing tall, straight into a wrapping cut back that landed him a huge 9.87. Mick took the lead, leaving Julian searching to replace his low back up score. Unable to do so, time expired and Mick took the win.
Now, Mick will look to complete his World Title run at the last event of the 2015 World Championship Tour season, the Billabong Pipe Masters. Mick enters the final event of the season with two WCT event wins, and the current Jeep Leaderboard ratings lead. With his win at Sunset he is sure to be a favorite in the World Title scenario and we cannot wait to watch as he looks to bring home his 4th World Title.
