Rip Curl Team Rider Barney Miller Claims Silver Medal At The ISA World Adaptive Championships
San Diego, California, USA (Dec 13, 2016) – Barney is an inspiration to us all.
A friend of Mick Fanning’s since childhood and an avid surfer, Barney’s life was turned upside down one day when he was a passenger in a tragic car accident. He became a paraplegic from that day on.
A lot of people would have been defeated –would have given up the things that they love to do, the sports they follow, the dreams they want to achieve. But not Barney.
He made it his mission to live his life as well as he did before the accident –to overcome the adversity. He got back in the water. He kept surfing. He somehow was able to get down on one knee and propose to his girlfriend (now wife). He started a charity foundation. He made a movie. He kept living, and living well.
Over the years Barney has made a name for himself in the water, and on the weekend, when he competed in the 2016 ISA World Adaptive Championship held in Southern California, he did it again –on the flight back to Australia, Barney is bringing a big silver medal, won in the AS-5 Assist Final.
ISA President Fernando Aguerre summed it up well…“This was an incredible finish to a monumental week of competition for the sport of adaptive surfing. Throughout these four days we witnessed the sport grow and develop leaps and bounds.”
77 athletes. 22 countries. An astounding turnout and a competition to remember. Congrats to everyone who supported such a great event, especially to those who competed and ended up taking home medals.
Here’s to you, Barney! You’re an inspiration to us al
