11th Annual Rip Curl Pro Tofino - Pumping Surf And Stellar Performances

Friday, May 12th 2017 (Cox Bay, Tofino, BC, Canada) - The 11th annual Rip Curl Pro presented by Monster Energy kicked off competition today in pumping surf at Cox Bay, Tofino, Canada. Offshore head high peaks met the event’s top professional competitors as two rounds were completed in excellent conditions.

The talk of the beach was 3x WSL World Champion, 52-year-old Tom Curren, who advanced over 2016 Rip Curl Pro Tofino champion Kevin Schulz. In the dying minutes of the heat, Curren found a barrel only Curren could find, as he disappeared behind the curtain and re-emerged to the roar of the crowd.

A fired up Curren explained, “I knew they were out there, I was looking for them and I knew they were out there so I said, I’m just going to be ready in case I see one, and one came at the very end. So…I was pretty happy.”Another standout on day one of competition was California’s Kilian Garland. Garland, the 2016 WSL North American Champion was another new addition to the event, as each year sees a growing field of world-class talent.

Garland, who advanced through two heats with multiple excellent rides, explained his experience and reasoning for taking the long two-day drive up to Tofino.

“I’m still trying to get used to the spot, my boards, wearing gloves and booties and a hood [laughs]. It’s kind of a new experience [surfing in Tofino], you know? There are good rights and good lefts and they’re really long waves, so you can do a lot of different maneuvers.”

Garland continued, “I noticed this contest got a lot of press last year, and there’s some big names in it. You have got Tom Curren here, Noah Wegrich and Kevin Shulz who won it last year. Tofino is such a beautiful place, so why not come up here? It was kind of a last minute trip, I decided to enter the contest and then it was time to leave.”

One of today’s local standouts was Canadian National Team Member, Michael Darling, who advanced over 2x event champion, Noah Cohen. Darling used his polished forehand attack to tear apart the Cox Bay walls.

“It was a tough, I had a teammate, Noah Cohen in my heat and we kind of went back-and-forth a couple times and I thought he won and I was like ‘that’s great’because he’s a good friend and a teammate and it was a good start for him,”said an empathetic Darling, “My best results so far have been the semis and I would like to get back to the semis and try my best, but there is a lot of insane talent up here right now so it’s pretty full on!”

The day wrapped up with two rounds of the Open Men’s division as high quality surf continued to bless competitors all day long. Looking towards tomorrow’s second day of competition we will see numerous new divisions hitting the lineup, including 35+ Masters, Pro Women’s, U18 Boys, U16 Girls, U16 Boys, and Longboard Mens.
